The island’s climate has been voted one of the best in the world, but which are the windiest months in Fuerteventura ?
One of the factors that determine this pleasant “microclimate” is undoubtedly the wind, which would otherwise be torrid and unbearable.
Like all the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura has the particularity of being exposed to the trade winds.
These trade winds, with their very refreshing air currents, lower the temperature and at night it even drops to 18-20 degrees.
The wind in Fuerteventura blows constantly all year round, but living in Fuerteventura without it would be impossible.
Sometimes the hot, dry wind from Africa blows, moving sand from the Sahara Desert, called Calima.
The annoying Calima , which creates a haze with a yellow sky at times pink and causing temperatures to rise significantly and reducing visibility to hundreds of meters.
But what is the windiest time of year in Fuerteventura?
The windiest period in Fuerteventura is the summer months of June, July and August, with average wind speeds over 24 km/h.
It is precisely for this reason that the Windsurfing World Championship also takes place during this period .
Windsurfing and water sports enthusiasts flock to the island of Fuerteventura from all over the world to witness the spectacular waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
Of course, we are talking about estimates, since with ongoing climate change, one or more exceptions may occur.
In recent years, even during these months, the wind in Fuerteventura has been a simple caress and relief on hot days.
Which is the least windy beach in Fuerteventura?
The eastern part of the island is the least windy, although in the western part, more exposed to the trade winds, you can find beaches and coves sheltered from the wind.
But without a doubt the least windy beaches in Fuerteventura are those of Morro Jable and those of Costa Calma .
However, the entire southern area of Fuerteventura is much less windy than the locations in the north of the island.
In Morro Jable, even in January and February, temperatures are 3 or 4 degrees higher than in the north ( Corralejo or El Cotillo ).
This is because the hill at Morro Jable effectively protects the beaches from the north winds.

What’s the water temperature like on Fuerteventura’s beaches?
Due to its latitude and the cold ocean current (Atlantic Ocean), the sea temperature in Fuerteventura remains around 18 degrees in winter.
On hot summer days, the sea temperature reaches an average of 22 degrees.
It must be reiterated that if you are sensitive to the cold and cannot tolerate these sea temperatures, the island of Fuerteventura is not the ideal place.
On some days, when the wind is almost nonexistent, relaxing on the beach and enjoying the Fuerteventura sun is almost impossible.
The Atlantic Ocean offers a refreshing swim that regenerates body and soul.
It doesn’t matter if you choose the north of south of Fuerteventura, the island always offers intense emotions.
Is there rainfall in Fuerteventura?
The island of Fuerteventura has a mild climate almost all year round and rainfall is very scarce.
Fuerteventura does not have mountains high enough to stop clouds from rolling across the island without causing rain.
Annual rainfall in Fuerteventura reaches a level of only 140 mm, exclusively in autumn and winter from October to March.
Typically, the area with the greatest chance of rainfall is Costa Calma, in the south of Fuerteventura, and the island’s interior.
This is because in this town of Fuerteventura is located the Pico de la Zarza, which is also called the roof of the island, which stops the clouds.
However, the rains last only a few minutes and are never as heavy as in the rest of Spain or the other Canary Islands.
