Tiscamanita Windmills at Fuerteventura

Tiscamanita windmills are located in the small village of Tiscamanita in the municipality of Tuineje in the southwest of Fuerteventura.

East of the village of Tiscamanita, with its population of about 500 , lies the 461-meter-high Caldera de Gairia volcano, which has contributed to the aridity of the area.

Despite this, Tiscamanita remains one of the island’s popular agricultural centers for the cultivation of cereals and one of the most beautiful excursions at Fuerteventura.

In the small village of Tiscamanita is Ermita de San Marcos Evangelista , a small chapel founded by the Franciscans in the 17th century.

In addition to the Tiscamanita Mills , this picturesque village also features the Aloe Vera products factory , a company founded in 1989.

Here, pure aloe vera products such as shampoos, gels, and creams are produced, avoiding the use of pesticides.

The Tiscamanita Windmills Center is installed on a 19th-century mill, used for the production of gofio, the staple food of the Majoreros .

This ethnographic museum presents the history of the mill, the different types of mills, their construction, the cultivation of cereals and their grinding.

During a visit to the Tiscamanita Mills, visitors can try their hand at grinding grain as the Aborigines did.

Among the areas of the Tiscamanita Mills Interpretation Center there are some that arouse interest for their graphic elements.

The central patio is a typical representation of the Canarian courtyard, a distinctive feature of Canarian architecture from the 18th century to the present day.

In Molienda you can see the different grain milling processes and the artisanal mechanisms used to grind the grain for the production of gofio.

Which was then modernized with the grinding of wheat in the windmills of Tiscamanita and in other towns of Fuerteventura , thanks to the ever-present trade winds.

How to get there?

The Tiscamanita Windmills are approximately 34 km from Puerto del Rosario , a 36-minute drive, and the road to get there is very simple.

Follow the FV-20 and then proceed on the FV-430 until you reach the entrance to the village of Tiscamanita.

Then on the right, you see a path that leads to the Los Molinos Interpretation Centre with its imposing main mill.

You can easily reach this historical monument by bus or taxi.
