Puerto de la Peña, Natural monument of Ajuy

Puerto de la Peña , the Natural Monument of Ajuy, of 31.8 hectares, included in the Rural Park of Betancuria, is located on the western coast of Fuerteventura, municipality of Pàjara .

A point of great geological, paleontological and scientific interest, such as the existence of marine fossils, Pleistocene dunes and ocean sediments, observable from the surface.

The main ethnographic values of this Protected Space are in the export, on the one hand, of lime to the other Canary Islands from Puerto de la Peña.

And on the other hand, the export of syenite rock, used for the construction of cobblestones, a magmatic rock, similar to granite, but without quartz.

Its basal complex is made up of sedimentary, igneous and volcanic materials that best tell the story of Fuerteventura’s origins millions of years ago.

Here are the Ajuy Caves ( Las cuevas de Ajuy), formed by lava flows on the cliffs, some as high as 40 metres.

This natural monument presents forms inherited from other times, shaped in environmental and climatic conditions different from those of today, thus amplifying the beauty and interest of the place.

The trekking route in the Natural Monument

This Natural Monument is one of the most evocative trekking routes on the island, where the greatest interest in this area is formed by the oldest rocks in the Canary Islands .

Once you arrive you will be faced with the extraordinary and highly evocative beauty of the black beach of Ajuy and the breathtaking colors of the ocean.

At the bottom of the Ajuy Caves you can see the remains of an unfinished tunnel, which was thought to connect Puerto de la Peña with the nearby towns.

The route, 1.3 km long, can be covered in about half an hour and includes:

• Dunas Fòsiles,
• Horns of Cal
• El Cantil
• The Ramp
• The Caves

The route begins by following the coastline on the right along an easy official path that moves through a protected area, the same for the return road.

Here you can observe the extraordinarily beautiful petrified dunes, continuing with the splendid panoramic views of the coast and the cliff below.

If you wish, you can combine this short itinerary with a visit to the nearby and magnificent Barranco de las Peñitas in one day.

How to get to Puerto de la Peña?

Puerto de la Peña in Ajuy is located 50 km from Puerto del Rosario, following the FV-20 until Cementerio de Tuineje, where you continue on the FV-·30.

From the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Regla in Pàjara, continue on the FV-605 and then on the FV-621, towards Ajuy.

The road to the Ajuy Natural Monument is perfect for bus , taxi , or rental car in Fuerteventura.
