Grandes Playas is one of the magical beaches of Corralejo and the largest in the Canary Islands north of Fuerteventura, on the east coast of the municipality of La Oliva .

Nine kilometers of heavenly beaches bordered by the Dunes of Corralejo are a true earthly paradise for those seeking to enjoy the sea, the sun and relaxation.

A place where turquoise and emerald waters caress a coast covered with white sand formed naturally by the erosion of sea shells.

With great exfoliating properties for the skin, the white sand transforms this beach in Corralejo into an authentic natural spa with views of the enchanting islands of Lobos and Lanzarote.

The soft white sand and gentle, moderate waves make Grandes Playas at Corralejo one of the favorite places to spend a relaxing day with the family.

The Grandes Playas of Corralejo are located within the Corralejo Natural Park, a protected natural area of extraordinary and unspoiled beauty.

Archaeology and history of Grandes Playas

Human settlement in Corralejo dates back to about 2000 years ago, when the first settlers arrived from Africa on the island of Majorera and confirmation would be the archaeological remains of aboriginal origin.

Near the houses and the asphalt, you can see piles of shells, remains of ceramics and dwelling units made of dry stones, some of which are more than 500 years old.

Although the aborigines of Fuerteventura preferred the wild areas to build their homes, they went to the coast to stock up on supplies, both drinking water and small molluscs.

There are also several Aboriginal archaeological sites nearby and the wind often exposes archaeological material such as shell slabs, molluscs and even a 14th century coin.

Occasionally some beaches in Fuerteventura in Corralejo such as Grandes Playas have small “corralitos”.

They are made with volcanic rocks, which serve to shelter from the constant winds that characterise the Majorera coast.

These corralitos are also cared for by the people who visit them, adding more rows of stones when necessary, removing sand or picking up rubbish left by others.

Is it safe to swim in Grandes Playas ?

Yes, but you always have to be cautious because of the strong ocean currents.

Of course there are cases in which the wind of Fuerteventura blows with greater force for days and bathing becomes very dangerous and complicated.

However, bathing on the beaches of Fuerteventura, with the necessary precautions, is always pleasant.

For this reason, the lifeguards present along the entire coast keep a very careful watch over the entire coast and do not allow entry into the water further than a few metres from the shore.

Our travel advice to Fuerteventura is always to stick to the rules and not take initiatives that could prove dangerous.
