Puerto Lajas beach is located on the east coast of Fuerteventura, approximately 7 km from Puerto del Rosario, the capital of Fuerteventura.
It is a small shoe-shaped beach, about 700 m long and the medium-grained, black volcanic sand combines with the breathtaking colors of the ocean.
On this beach naturalism is not practiced and the constant wind offers the perfect conditions for practicing water sports such as:
- surfing
- windsurf
- kitesurf
- SUP
The best bathing area is located in the final section of the beach, because it’s the least windy part.
However, in the entire area there are few straw umbrellas to protect oneself from the sun.
Nearby there are dirt parking lots, boat rentals, lifeguard equipment and support for people with reduced mobility.
It is easy to get to this beach, by car from Puerto del Rosario following the FV 1 towards Corralejo or by taking the buses that connect Puerto del Rosario with Corralejo.
Beach features
Playa de Puerto Lajas is a small beach of black volcanic sand, which characterizes most of the territory of Fuerteventura.
On the beach there are no sunbeds, umbrellas, toilets or showers, just one or two straw umbrellas that seem to want to tell the centuries-old history of the place.
You can choose to have a packed lunch, or take advantage of the few bars on the beach and enjoy a meal with an ocean view.
A few meters from the seashore, the colorful fishing boats, symbol of the authenticity of this typical Canarian village, offer postcard views.
The vegetation around is typical of arid coastal areas and the waters are home to a rich marine life.
Here, snorkelling lovers can admire the typical marine world of Fuerteventura in all its splendor.
Near this beach there are some bars anch restaurants with spectaculars ocean views.
Culture and tradition of the village of Puerto Lajas
Puerto Lajas is a very old and picturesque village of a few houses and fishing boats, which belonged to the extinct municipality of Tetir.
This very quiet beach with a dream sunset is the ideal place for holidays with family and small children, but it is not very well known by tourists.
A few steps from the beach there are some bars and restaurants, where you can taste the local gastronomic delicacies and drink some special cocktails.
Here every year a celebration is held in honour of the Virgen del Peña, who is taken from her chapel and covered in yellow flowers, before being put on a boat and sailed along the coast of the village.
Puerto Lajas is known for its windmills used to grind grain which have been declared a Property of Cultural Interest.
An element of great interest is that this small village has a very rich and unique flora and fauna like the whole island of Fuerteventura.
What to do in Puerto Lajas?
Puerto Lajas , belonging to the municipality of Puerto del Rosario , is a small town that combines peace and tranquility with the wild and uncontaminated nature of Fuerteventura.
This enchanting place, when the sea is calm, is perfect for a relaxing day for families with small children, thanks to the shallow waters.
When the trade winds blow hard, the sky turns into a rainbow of colors from windsurfing sails, dancing on the Atlantic waves.
Nearby there are some bars a few meters from the sea, which offer breakfasts, lunches based on sandwiches, hamburgers and toasts and aperitifs.
The enchantment of Puerto Lajas beach is even more noticeable when the sun begins to set and rests on the ocean waves, creating truly magical scenes.
And in the evening the moon and the stars become the protagonists par excellence, able to enchant the gaze, giving indescribable emotions.
How to get to Puerto Lajas beach?
Getting to Puerto Lajas beach from Puerto del Rosario is very easy and convenient.
Of course you can reach this beach by bus, taxi, car rental or a bike rental.
