Lajares a typical Majorero village in the hinterland of Fuerteventura

A place that embodies all of this is Lajares,  a small village made up of white houses, typical of Majorere, just 12 km from Corralejo.

Surrounded on one side by beaches with soft sand and a crystal clear turquoise sea and on the other by volcanoes.

Until a few years ago, Lajares was a rural village, where tourism was non-existent, but today it is one of the most popular destinations for tourists.

Despite everything, this city of Fuerteventura  offers all the services that a visitor needs such as supermarket, pharmacy, bars, restaurants, shops and excursion centers.

Located in an area very close to all the main beaches in the north of Fuerteventura , it is a strategic point for lovers of water sports, trekking or cycling excursions .

From here you can take the path towards the Calderón Hondo volcano and admire an enchanting panorama of the entire north coast of Fuerteventura.

In the southern part of the island there are two windmills, next to the village church.

An almost ancient atmosphere that mixes with modern clamor without being contaminated.

 

Historic center of Lajares

The historical center of Lajares is small, but very picturesque and well kept.

Despite its geographical location and the presence of tourists, it still maintains the authentic spirit of the island of Fuerteventura.

• textile workshops to work with old looms
• felt work
• wood and leather work

Every Saturday in the central square, we can find a very well-kept local craft market with stalls of small and large handmade works.

In these stalls you will immediately notice a series of wooden artefacts with the colours of the sea such as: furnishing accessories, lamps, key rings.

We find leather and hide products, made with old wetsuits, bags and much more.

 

What to see in Lajares?

 

Calderon Hondo

After a walk of about an hour you reach the top, from where you can admire a breathtaking view up to see the coast and a sensational crater.

Jable ravine (Barranco del jable)

They are geological formations with a spectacular view.

Some call it a miniature Grand Canyon but Barranco del Jable offers much more.

You park where the road meets the river, and continue on foot along the river, climbing towards the hills.

Lajares Crafts (Artesania Lajares)

Here you can find handmade tablecloths, local ceramics, local gastronomic products such as sauces, salts, jams, olive oil from the island and excellent goat cheeses.

You can also find aloe vera products , perfumes, goat’s milk soap, etc.

In short, a wide range of gifts and souvenirs.

 

Beaches of Lajares

Caleta Beatriz (near Majanicho)

A beach that is not very well known, as it is not signposted.

The white sand stretches for 200 m in length, the gentle waves and the pale blue colour of its waters, remind one of a Caribbean paradise.

The inlets formed by tidal fluctuations create a natural path.

These coves of black rock and white sand, the numerous natural pools created by rock formations of various sizes and compositions, give the beach a unique appearance.

La Caleta de Beatriz is suitable for families, as it is shallow and peaceful.

A perfect place to relax and enjoy the views of the Tostón Lighthouse.

Nightlife at Lajares

The nightlife at Lajares is limited and we can say that is not exactly the ideal place to spend a “Noche Loca” on the island of Fuerteventura.

But without a doubt this city of Fuerteventura has a lot of potential to increase its tourist appeal.

The accommodations and holiday homes in Lajares are a mix of charm, modernity and local tradition.

And not only that, there are unmissable places to eat, drink and spend enchanting evenings in this unique place.

Excellent local gastronomy, the friendliness and cheerfulness of the locals, the breathtaking landscapes, make Lajares an enchanting place.

The bars offer live themed music every evening, alternating evenings of acoustic guitar, reggae music, rock and live music.

And for the more “brave” there is the possibility of joining them by singing or playing.

Accompanied by live music, you can take a long walk and enjoy breathtaking sunsets.

And for those who love shopping, along the main street, which is the one that makes up the commercial part of Lajares, there are many small shops selling natural and local products.

How to get to Lajares?

Getting to Lajares from Puerto del Rosario is very easy, as the road is in perfect condition.

The Fuerteventura town of La Oliva is about 30 km from the capital of Fuerteventura, a distance that can be easily covered by taxi, bus or rental car.

Follow the FV-3, FV-1 and FV-102 towards La Oliva and then take FV-109 towards Lajares for about 26 minutes.
