Antigua, the ancient village of windmills in Fuerteventura

The town of Antigua is located on the east coast of the island and is 17 km south of Fuerteventura’s capital Puerto del Rosario.

Old farmhouses, typical Canarian-style houses and still-functioning windmills, which produce toasted corn, characterise the relaxing and fascinating landscape of this Fuerteventura city.

The picturesque church of Nuestra Senora de Antigua, built in Arab style in 1785 and with an external bell tower, is very interesting and the town centre is also home to some small art galleries.

Once upon a time, the traditional economy was based on agriculture, the production of wheat, barley, millet, etc., and now also aloe vera.

Livestock raising is very important, while coastal fishing is limited mainly to the port of Pozo Negro.

Today tourism has become the main economic activity with the famous resort of Caleta de Fuste , one of the most important tourist centres on the island of Fuerteventura.

Along the town there are football and golf fields, municipal swimming pools, and a shopping centre, also accessible from the seafront.

Antigua’s top attractions

The historic center of Antigua houses a complex of high historical and artistic value that is reflected in its architecture.

There are villages whose cultural heritage speaks to us of a past of splendour and this is the case of Antigua, in the central plain of Fuerteventura.

But if something defines the landscape of the place it is its windmills, whose blades are moved by the gentle and warm breath of the trade winds.

Salt Museum Salinas del Carmen , a museum in an old salt mine that tells the history and production of sea salt and related ethnography.

It includes the salt warehouse, the salt house and the remains of the old boat, and is a very suggestive natural place.

Museo del Queso Majorero , an interactive museum of goat cheese making, restored mill, cactus garden and local crafts.

The excellent quality of goat’s milk, dense and aromatic, is one of the main secrets of Majorero cheese.

Cuchillos de Vigan , is a picturesque national park by the sea, with rugged cliffs along the coast and hiking trails.

With a beautiful, dizzying walk, you discover an enchanting place and a breathtaking panorama opens up before your eyes.

Other attractions of Antigua

The Centro de Artesania Molino de Antigua was renovated in 1997, but has retained all of its traditional mechanisms.

This mill was once used to grind grain for the entire village of Antigua, it produced “gofio” (flour of various cereals), a staple food of the Canarians.

A garden of cacti from all over the world and native palm trees has been created around the mill. The barn has been transformed into a restaurant.

Inglesia de Nuestra Señora de Antigua , a church built between 1761 and 1770 in Baroque style, white in a delightful little flower-filled square.

The church of Nuestra Senora de Antigua, a very charming place, is located in front of the municipal library and an interesting recreational club.

This is a unique ship temple in its style.

Antigua nightlife

Nightlife in Antigua is mainly focused on Caleta de Fuste.

Natyrally Caleta de Fuste is one of the most popular destinations for europian tourists, that prefer to have all the services at their fingertips.

Here the evenings come alive with the presence of many restaurants, bars and pizzerias.

Great locations with breathtaking views of the ocean, exquisite food, with fresh fish and local specialties such as gofio and fish soup.

Cocktails with a wide range of varieties (especially excellent sangria) in the company of great music.

How to get to Antigua?

You can get to Antigua in 3 ways : by bus , taxi or with a rental car .

From Puerto del Rosario , bus line 1 – 26 minutes and by car or taxi approximately 17 minutes.

Starting from Puerto del Rosario, continue towards Morro Jable on FV-2 and then on FV-2 and FV- 413 to visit all the villages of Antigua, such as:
