Las Salinas del Carmen Museum at Fuerteventura

Las Salinas del Carmen Museum is one of the most evocative natural sites at Fuerteventura and is located on Costa de Antigua.

This wonderful place is integrated into the salt mine facilities, which include:

• The salt warehouse
• The salt worker’s house
• The remains of the old pier

Las Salinas del Carmen are the only salt mines in Fuerteventura still in operation, covering 26,100 m2 and comprising 10 kitchens and nearly 1,000 pits.

During your visit, for a day you can immerse yourself in the craft and discover one of the treasures of the island of Fuerteventura .

The Salinas del Carmen produce a very high quality salt thanks to the cleanliness of its waters and is part of the Network of Museums of Fuerteventura.

The peculiar way of obtaining “foam” sea salt, together with the traditional daily pressing, allows us to obtain a fine-grained white salt that is very rich in trace elements.

A bit of history

Don Manuel Velázquez Cabrera opens the door of his home to delve into the history of the Salinas del Carmen .

We owe him the expansion and improvement of the salt pans as we know them today, which before his arrival were abandoned.

In 1910 Manuel Velázquez Cabrera began work on the salt mines , to exploit them and make the most of them.

The Museo de Las Salinas del Carmen is a journey into the past, a unique experience thanks to the use of new technologies combined with the atmosphere of the turn of the last century.

Here we tell the story of salt and its importance to the Canary Islands, as well as the long process of obtaining this precious element.

The best part comes in the outdoor area of the Salt Museum , in the salt mines where you can see the journey of seawater to become salt.

How Las Salinas works?

In the salt mine facilities you can see how Las Salinas works  and visit the kitchens, ovens and warehouses where the salt is stored.

A product so common in every home, yet so unknown, it is worth exploring this unique production process to enhance its value.

In other salt pans on the island of Fuerteventura, seawater is pumped or enters the tanks through channels.

In the Salinas del Carmen, however, the seawater arrives in a very particular way thanks to the waves, which is why it is known as “foam salt”.

Harnessing the power of the sea and wind, the water is transported to the “cocedores,” the pools where the water patiently waits to be heated by the sun.

Continuing its path through the canals, the water reaches the “tajos”, where it evaporates to make room for salt.

How to get to the Salinas del Carmen Museum?

Reaching the Salinas del Carmen Museum is very easy and convenient, as it is only 17 km away, a 20-minute drive.

Proceed on FV-2 until you reach Las Salinas del Carmen.

Of course, you can choose to reach the Museum by taxi or by bus .

However, the best way to fully enjoy the extraordinary beauty of Fuerteventura’s nature and its attractions is to rent a car.
