Los Estancos in Puerto del Rosario

Los Estancos is a small hamlet belonging to the municipality of Puerto del Rosario , located 260 meters above sea level.

The name of the place itself offers a clue to its past, which refers to a good or activity subject to a monopoly or control, such as tobacco or salt.

Although in the rural context of Fuerteventura it has also been linked to fenced or delimited spaces.

The architecture of Los Estancos reflects the traditional style of Fuerteventura : single-story houses, made of whitewashed brick.

Characterized by simple and functional lines, their architecture recalls a bygone era, blending with more modern architectural elements. 

Houses are often arranged in small family groups, evidence of a social organization based on large family units and cooperation between neighbors.

In this location was located the first aerodrome of Fuerteventura , operational from 1951 until 1969.

Its trail crossed the road that connected Tetir with Puerto del Rosario.

The Caves of Los Estancos

The Los Estancos Caves are located in a fossilized sand canyon, a surprising and little-known landscape inland from Puerto del Rosario.

Many visitors compare Cuevas de Los Estancos , a unique hidden gem, and Fuerteventura to the arid, eroded landscapes of the American Midwest. 

The Los Estancos ravine is currently dry, but it retains the geological traces of ancient flows, visible in its walls and in the smooth shapes sculpted by erosion.

The walls of compact sand, with their light hues and smooth textures, create a setting that breaks with the traditional image of beaches and volcanoes associated with Fuerteventura. 

Here, the landscape resembles a silent, isolated canyon of petrified sand, where time seems to have stood still.

A hidden gem, and this is precisely the charm of the caves, which are not a very well-known tourist destination.

Reaching the  Los Estancos caves and Barranco is part of the overall experience, especially for those who love discovering authentic and off-the-beaten-path places.

It is a clear example of how geological, landscape, and cultural values ​​are intertwined in Fuerteventura, especially in the more remote areas.

How to get there?

Getting to Los Estancos from Puerto del Rosario is easy and convenient, as it is only 6.8 km from the capital of Fuerteventura.

This distance can be covered by taxi, rental car, motorbike or scooter in about 10 minutes, following the FV 20.
