Sotavento beach is the classic postcard beach, with crystal clear waters, mentioned in all the guides as one of the most beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura.
This beach, shaped by the tides, is located precisely in the town of Costa Calma , in the Jandía Natural Park, a protected natural area of Fuerteventura island.
It is one of the most famous and popular beaches of Fuerteventura, known for its fine sand, crystal clear turquoise waters and gentle ocean waves.
The peculiarity of this beach is its lagoon shape, when the low tide creates a spectacular strip of sand, creating a unique and enchanting landscape.
The geographical location of Sotavento Beach makes it particularly favorable to the trade winds that blow constantly, which attracts many lovers of water sports.
Playa de Sotavento is also suitable for families with small children , as it is easily accessible thanks to its shallow waters.
It doesn’t matter if you are a lover of breathtaking beaches or a water sports enthusiast, this beach leaves everyone who visits it enchanted.
Features and services available in Playa de Sotavento
Like all the beaches on the Jandia Peninsula , Playa de Sotavento is also a wild and uncontaminated beach and here there are no sunbeds and umbrellas.
There are no bars or restaurants, so it is advisable to bring everything you need for a relaxing day and enjoy the enchanting view.
There are also several windsurfing and kitesurfing schools offering beginner courses and water sports equipment rental.
It is important to note that Sotavento Beach is divided into several sections, each with a slightly different and unique atmosphere:
- Laguna de Sotavento , where most of the facilities and activities are located
- Playa Risco del Paso and Playa Barca , if you prefer a quieter and less crowded beach
- Playa Mirador, Playa Los Canarios, Playa de Mal Nombre, with extraordinary beauty
The beach is also very popular with windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts, where the wind reigns supreme and dancing among the waves is a real spectacle.
Although this is not one of the equipped beaches in Fuerteventura , the magic of this place is known throughout the world.
Sotavento Beach with its bay “ Playa de la Barca ” hosts the Windsurfing and Kitesurfing World Championship every year , pure adrenaline among the waves.
During this event the best windsurfers from all over the world compete in the waters of Playa de Sotavento, creating an exceptional spectacle for spectators.
How to get to Sotavento beach?
To get Sotavento beach from Costa Calma, a city of Fuerteventura south it’s too easy, as it is just 11 km away.
Being one of the longest beaches on the Costa Calma, Playa de Sotavento is the ideal space for those looking for a quiet environment without crowds in which to enjoy nature.
As soon as you arrive at Sotavento beach, a few metres from the shore there are signs indicating the possibility of practising water sports on the right.
Enjoying a very long coastline of Caribbean white sand, Sotavento Beach is never too crowded, despite being the most visited in Fuerteventura.
The problem for parking does not exist, as there is a large space to park and as in all the beaches of Fuerteventura it is free.
Be very careful when parking, as the road is unpaved and the wind can move rocks, even large ones.
At this beach, especially in the final part, there are people who love to practice nudism , favoring the innermost part of the beach.
For anyone with very fair skin, it is recommended to constantly apply a sunscreen suitable for your skin, to avoid sunburn.
