Fuerteventura Airport is located 5 km from Puerto del Rosario,the capital of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Spain.

In 1940, work began on the construction of a military airport at Tefía , which also opened for commercial traffic in 1950. 

In 1952, due to the increase in air traffic, the structure was replaced by the current Fuerteventura airport, located in El Matorral which was inaugurated in 1969.

The first domestic flight to land at the new facility was a Fokker F27 on a route from Gran Canaria (LPA) to Fuerteventura (FUE) and Lanzarote (ACE).

The first international flights in 1973 made its expansion and modernization necessary, which took place in 1994 and 2001.

Currently the terminal of Fuerteventura airport , managed by AENA, is equipped with:

  • 66 check-in desks, including 2 dedicated to special baggage such as windsurf boards, strollers, and animal cages 
  • 24 gate 
  • 12 boarding gates for aircraft access 
  • 14 baggage claim belts and 1 dedicated to special baggage

Reaching other cities in Fuerteventura from El Matorral Airport is easy and convenient, choosing between:

  • buses , very efficient and with all the necessary comforts
  • taxis , present as soon as you exit Fuerteventura airport
  • car rental , with various companies present within El Matorral airport

 

Where is Fuerteventura Airport located?

Fuerteventura Airport is located in El Matorral , 5 kilometers from the city of Puerto del Rosario, the island’s capital. 

This airport serves over 80 destinations worldwide, and with around 8 million passengers, constantly growing every year, it is one of the most important in the Canary Islands.

There are many airlines that fly to and from Fuerteventura , whether they are charter, national airlines or low-cost. 

Most flights to Fuerteventura , the oldest island of the Canaries , come from Northern Europe and several direct connections with Italy, operated by lots of local and european airlines.

To reach the beaches and various tourist resorts on the island, there is a wide choice of local buses and shuttles.

At the exit of the Fuerteventura airport terminal there are numerous taxis , to allow you to reach any city in Fuerteventura comfortably.

However, for greater autonomy and freedom of movement, a rental car is recommended , to be able to explore the hidden and evocative places of the island.

Fuerteventura Airport has a single terminal: arrivals, located on the ground floor, and departures, open from 7:30 am to 11:00 pm. 

Tourism is the island’s main economic resource, with over 6 million passengers a year, making Fuerteventura the most important airport in the Canary Islands. 

Especially from Northern Europe, there is a strong influx of tourists throughout the year, with many German retirees making Fuerteventura a prime destination. 

Fuerteventura Airport offers a large number of domestic and international flights. Among the main low-cost airlines that fly to the airport are: 

  • Volotea, Vueling, Wizzair, Tui Airways, EasyJet and others
  • Flag carriers: Iberia, Air Europa, Lufthansa, Norwegian and others

Inside El Matorral Airport there are numerous services, all managed by AENA, the owner of most Spanish airports:

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Paid parking is available at the exit of the airport terminal.

Inside Fuerteventura airport there are several international car rental companies , where it is always advisable to book in advance to access the most advantageous rates.

For departures from El Matorral airport, it’s preferable to arrive 2 hours before departure, with your documents and boarding pass.

To check in your hold luggage, follow the signs for baggage claim, which in Spanish reads “Recogida de Equipajes.”
