Tefia, a rural village at Fuerteventura

Tefia is a small rural village in Fuerteventura , belonging to the municipality of Puerto del Rosario .

Chapel of St. Augustine 

The chapel of St. Augustine (Ermita de San Agostino) , built in 1713, is a place of particular interest, as it is the patron saint of the town.

The first building, financed by locals, was quite small and what you see today is the result of later renovations.

The chapel of Sant’Agostino is typical of Fuerteventura, few frescoes and all inside in artistic wood, surrounded by palm trees and flowers that decorate its small square.

Tefia Mill

The Molino de Tefia dates back to the 1930s and is distinguished by its 6 wings, compared to the others in Fuerteventura which have 4 wings.

It was used by farmers in the area for grinding cereals such as wheat, barley, oats and for the traditional Canarian gofio.

The Molino de Tefia has been declared a Cultural Interest Property of the island of Fuerteventura in the category of Historic Artistic Monument.

Ecomuseum of the Alcogida

Just 1 km from Tefia is Ecomuseo La Alcogida , an open-air ethnographic museum, which traces the traditional rural life of Fuerteventura in the 19th century.

The museum is housed in the houses of the hamlet of La Alcogida.

The name means a kind of field used for rainwater, an almost sacred resource.

Ecomuseo de la Alcogida is made up of 7 buildings that were uninhabited until the 1970s and restored in 1990 according to traditional architecture and with original materials.

You can visit the houses, each with the name of its former owner and observe the main activities of the place:

• the kitchen
• the weaving
• the embroidery
• the work of ceramics

The representation of daily life on the island in the Ecomuseo de la Alcogida is evident in the furnishings with outbuildings, barns, stables for domestic animals, as well as their household utensils.

Furthermore, during the visit to the houses you can witness the grinding of wheat.

In addition, three times a week you can taste the special bread with anise.

How to get there?

Tefia is approximately 20 km from Puerto del Rosario, reachable in just 20 minutes with a rental car .

Or you can decide to arrive by taxi, or by bus.

And in just 10 minutes you van also reach the picturesque village of Tetir.

Proceed from Puerto del Rosario on the FV-207 towards Tamariche, then continue towards Tefia.
