Pozo Negro at Fuerteventura

Pozo Negro in Fuerteventura is a small port village located in the municipality of Antigua, north of the Malpais Grande Protected Landscape.

The Pozo Negro exposition , which facilitates the anchoring of ships, has long been the main port of the island of Fuerteventura since the 15th century.

The Pozo Negro Valley is the largest in the municipality of Antigua and narrows towards the coast to become a ravine, called “barranco” by the islanders.

The landscape of this location is the driest on the island of Fuerteventura and is characterized by arid valleys and an enormous black lava that flows into the sea.

In the ravine of Pozo Negro at Fuerteventura there is an archaeological site, an aboriginal settlement: La Atalayita, a village of about 115 houses,

It is a primitive village of houses made of volcanic stone, called “ Malpais” , dating back to the period before the Norman conquest.

The inhabitants are mainly dedicated to goat breeding, as well as agriculture with the cultivation of oats, thanks to the high fertility of the soil.

However, the “ Majos ” also engaged in fishing, and archaeological excavations have discovered many very ancient ceramic scraps.

Playa de Pozo Negro at Fuerteventura with its dark sand in one area and golden in another, creates a surprising contrast with the ocean waters.

Pozo Negro Beach

Playa de Pozo Negro is a 300-metre long strip of black sand that extends along the rarely visited eastern coast of Fuerteventura.

This beach is made up of pebbles and rather coarse black sand and with moderate waves, as it is not one of the least windy beaches in Fuerteventura

This is a small but very suggestive beach, suitable for those who want a relaxing day on wild beaches, away from the crowds.

In the midst of an unusual and untouched landscape, on the shore you can see some small white and blue buildings that belong to some fishermen of the area.

The most distinctive feature of Playa de Pozo Negro at Fuerteventura is its dark black color, which contrasts sharply with the mountains surrounding the bay.

How to get there?

Pozo Negro is located 34 km from the capital of Fuerteventura,  Puerto del Rosario , a 30-minute drive.

Follow the FV-2 from Puerto del Rosario towards Morro Jable and then continue on the FV-420 towards Pozo Negro .
