Puertito de Los Molinos at Fuerteventura

Puertito de Los Molinos is a hamlet of about fifteen people, located on the western coast of the island of Fuerteventura, on the road that connects La Oliva and Betancuria.

The village of Puertito de Los Molinos is the westernmost town in the municipality of Puerto del Rosario.

Among the reasons to visit this small and charming fishing village are the excellent cuisine of its restaurants and a wonderful beach that invites surfing.

Equally singular is the fact that the name of this location alludes to a construction closely linked to the centuries-old agricultural and livestock tradition of Fuerteventura.

People here traditionally live off goats and especially fishing, and for this reason you can see many fishing boats on the beach.

What is special about this area?

Los Molinos Dam, which is located in the Barranco de Los Molinos valley and is the largest freshwater reserve on the island.

Thanks to this, many types of birds are encouraged to live in the area, making it one of the best bird watching areas on the entire island.

Its construction was due to the need to provide irrigation water to the agricultural colony of Las Parcelas, located two kilometers from the dam.

It is currently the largest dam on the island and its location, in the middle of a mountainous landscape, offers one of the most contrasting views on the island.

Construction work on the Puertito de Los Molinos dam began in 1943 under the leadership of General Garcia Escamez et Iniesta.

The capacity of the tank was 500,000 cubic meters and in a second phase it was doubled to meet the continuing demands.

This dam is the most important basin on the island of Fuerteventura for the irrigation of crops.

 

History of Puertito de Los Molinos

Puertito de Los Molinos  has a long history and tradition and as a permanent human settlement, dates back to the end of the 19th century.

Here the houses were built in a very artisanal way, using elements present in the environment such as: stones, sand and lime.

The first inhabitants were coastal fishermen, goat-herding residents and workers in the lime industry, which became one of the island’s main economic drivers.

Despite being a small cove, this small city of Fuerteventura had some importance since the 18th century.

It became the main port for the docking of ships carrying limestone to other ports such as Morro Jable.

In addition, in the surroundings of Puertito de Los Molinos, several kilns were built, the structures of which are still preserved.

In addition to the picturesque houses in the maritime style, here you can also visit a small oratory, which venerates an image of the Virgin of Carmen, patron saint of seafarers.

 

What to do and see in Puertito de Los Molinos?

In this simple town you can enjoy a very uncrowded beach, Los Molinos beach.

Playa de Los Molinos is certainly the most suggestive place at Fuerteventura, a  small and pretty beach, surrounded by tiny fishermen’s houses.

If the tide permits, it is possible to walk to the sea cave located on the southern side of the imposing cliffs that protect the city.

Another option is to hike along the Los Molinos ravine , which ends right in the village.

Los Molinos beach is, like all the beaches on the rugged western coast of Fuerteventura, very exposed to strong currents with stormy waves.

Its waters are rough and the sea usually makes bathing very dangerous in this area, but it is ideal for surfing enthusiasts.

Bathing at La Playa de Los Molinos is only possible at september, october and november.

During the winter this beach is formed by rounded stones due to the sea waves, while in summer, when the sea is less strong, the beach is covered with thick and fine golden sand.

However, throughout the year it is possible to climb the cliffs to enjoy the wonderful view and the splendid sunsets that only Fuerteventura can offer.

The most curious thing about this area happens in September, when the famous super tides open the way to impressive natural caves, reachable on foot only at low tide.

How to reach Puertito de Los Molinos?

To get to Puertito de Los Molinos from Puerto del Rosario is very easy and convenient.

This location is about 27 km from the capital of Fuerteventura.

Take the FV 20 towards Antigua and FV 207 towards Tefia and FV 221.

Of course, it is possible to reach this city of Fuerteventura with a rental car or by taxi.
