Ajuy beach with wild black sand beach and its caves

The village of Ajuy

Ajuy is a small fishing village, located on the west coast of Fuerteventura and is part of the municipality of Pajara, towards La Pared beach to the south.

Although today it lives mainly on tourism, its economy was originally based on fishing.

The port of Ajuy , for several centuries was one of the most important in Fuerteventura.

The geology of this town of Fuerteventura is made up of small ravines and ridges that descend to the sea, forming a spectacular coastal cliff.

Far from the main tourist centers of the island, Ajuy is a quiet and welcoming seaside town, known for its suggestive caves in the Natural Monument.

The Caves of Ajuy

Legend has it that pirates who once plundered the island of Fuerteventura used the caves of Ajuy as a refuge to hide their loot.

The caves of Ajuy with an interesting geology are a must-see for many tourists, as one of the most beautiful caves of Fuerteventura.

The fascinating caves of Ajuy beach have been classified as a natural monument since 1994, according to the law of Natural Areas of the Canary Islands.

To reach the caves, along the coastal path, it takes about 20 minutes, enjoying a truly suggestive panorama.

You can enjoy all the beauty and immensity of the horizon, the thousand colors of the ocean.

Once you reach the caves, if the waters are not too turbulent, you can visit the interior with a magical and unique atmosphere.

The Monument of Puerto de la Peña 

Puerto de la Peña , the Natural Monument of Ajuy, of 31.8 hectares, included in the  Rural Park of Betancuria,  is located on the western coast of Fuerteventura, municipality of  Pàjara .

Point of great geological, paleontological and scientific interest, such as the existence of marine fossils, Pleistocene dunes and ocean sediments, observable from the surface.

The main ethnographic values ​​of this Protected Space are in the export, on the one hand, of lime to the other  Canary Islands  from  Puerto de la Peña.

And on the other hand, the export of syenite rock, used for the construction of cobblestones, a magmatic rock, similar to granite, but without quartz.

Due to the strong sea currents that characterize this stretch of coast, it is advisable to swim with great caution.

But relaxing on this wonderful beach, surrounded by a spectacular landscape, is an unforgettable experience.

Just inside Ajuy beach you will find typical bars and restaurants serving delicious grilled fish dishes.

Or alternatively you can bring a packed lunch and enjoy a lovely picnic.

How to get to Ajuy beach?

To get to Ajuy beach from Puerto del Rosario you can rent a car, taxi or bus.

This beach is about 50 km from the capital of Fuerteventura, a distance that can be covered in 50 minutes.

The road to get there is in excellent condition following FV – 20 towards Antigua, until reaching the municipality of Tuineje.

Then continue on FV – 30 towards the municipality of Pàjara and FV 621 towards Ajuy.
