Punta de Jandia lighthouse: the authentic soul of Fuerteventura

Punta de Jandía Lighthouse is a rare treasure that preserves the most authentic soul of the island of Fuerteventura, one of the first lighthouses in the Canary Islands.

It was previously managed and maintained by a lighthouse keeper, but now operates thanks to a modern electrical system that includes solar panels.

This lighthouse, 33 meters above sea level, was intended to guide passenger ships traveling between the islands and local fishing boats.

The Punta de Jandía lighthouse houses a museum and an interpretation centre, where the history, culture, fauna and flora of the Jandía Natural Park are presented to the public.

History and construction of the Jandía Lighthouse 

The Punta de Jandía Lighthouse was designed by the young engineer Juan de León y Castillo and inaugurated in December 1864.

In addition to this monument, one of the most evocative in Fuerteventura , the engineer designed eight other lighthouses in strategic points of the Canary Islands.

Its mission was to guide ships traveling from Europe to ports in West Africa, Spain, and France.

As well as the ships that departed from the port of Las Palmas towards Gran Tarajal and Puerto de Rosario.

The lighthouse is supported by a 19m conical tower, powered by 56 solar panels and its white light reaches 22 nautical miles.

Located at the point where the island curves, looking out to sea, you can see a thin line drawn by the waves, offering spectacular views.

Among the tide pools that form at low tide, a wide variety of marine life can be observed.

 

General information

Anyone wishing to visit the Jandia Natural Park exhibition can do so from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 to 18:00.

The exhibition presents themes divided into 5 colored zones including:

• The orange room illustrates the geological characteristics of the Natural Park of Jandia
• green room, is dedicated to vegetation and flora
• grey room, is the audiovisual room where information is provided on Fuerteventura as a biosphere reserve
• blue room, contains information on birds, reptiles, terrestrial fauna and terrestrial and marine invertebrates
• brown room, provides information on maritime signals, in particular on the Punta Faro

The Punta de Jandia Lighthouse is located in an area where wild and deserted nature reigns supreme, making the journey there seem difficult and winding.

How to get to the Punta de Jandía lighthouse 

Getting to the Punta de Jandia Lighthouse is a wonderful adventure that begins as soon as you take the road from Morro Jable towards Cofete beach.

The journey of approximately 23 km from Morro Jable takes about 45 minutes, following the FV – 2, turning right and taking the Contrada Punta de Jandia for almost 20 km.

Here the asphalt soon gives way to a dirt track with a rather steep slope, where every cloud of dust is part of the experience.

It would be much better to rent a 4×4 vehicle and always remain safe while driving and enjoy this wonderful journey.

The route passes through breathtaking landscapes: rugged mountains to the left, the sparkling ocean to the right. 

Some stretches seem impossible, but don’t stop, and if the road asks you to slow down, try to savor every moment. 

The last few meters on foot are a pilgrimage towards the light, towards that white beacon that finally stands out against the infinite sky.

In this special place, the silence of the desert meets the sweet song of the stormy waves of the Atlantic Ocean, and everything unites with the rustle of the wind.
