All the details to plan your trip to Fuerteventura, exploring its natural beauty from north to south.
Let’s travel across Fuerteventura in just a few days, to fully enjoy the entire island!
An itinerary with stops in all the essentials of the island: beaches, panoramic points and the most beautiful villages.
I admit it. I’m not objective. I’ve never been to the Canary Islands.
Before setting foot on Fuerteventura, I already felt that I would fall in love with the island.
I had been planning this vacation for several years and, for a thousand reasons, the trip never came to pass.
What did I find? Exactly what I expected, and many surprises.
Endless paradise beaches with impossible colors, otherworldly volcanic landscapes , and so many places I’m sharing with you today.
Very helpful.
Fuerteventura… The island of the wind.
Long awaited, dreamed of many times and finally the trip has arrived.
Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands and has been declared a Biosphere Reserve.
Its arid appearance and the fact that its highest point is only 807 meters high, shape the climate and landscape we will encounter.
An incredible contrast between the coast and the interior , between the north and the south. It’s an island full of surprises and bright colors.
FLIGHTS
Flight prices have dropped significantly in recent years, even more so if you’re traveling outside the summer months.
After researching the best options, you can book some flights at the beginning of May, even from Madrid, which are cheaper.
FERRIES
Another way to access the island, especially if you’re considering a combined trip with Lanzarote or Tenerife, is by sea through the ports of Fuerteventura.
To find the best routes, timetables, and to make a reservation, we recommend consulting the ferry websites.
CAR RENTAL
Car rentals in the Canary Islands are cheaper than on the mainland, so don’t even think about it.
Check out the car rental offers from the main companies operating in Fuerteventura and choose the one that’s right for you.
The roads of Fuerteventura are in perfect condition and, except for the most touristy spots, traffic is virtually non-existent.
Of course, remember that we are on a very large island and that the distances from one end to the other are considerable.
STAYING IN FUERTEVENTURA
It’s difficult to choose where to stay in Fuerteventura, given the unique beauty found everywhere.
Stay in the north of the island, in Corralejo or El Cotillo, two towns with a good atmosphere and all the necessary services.
You can stay in apartments in the centre of Corralejo , small but quite nice.
If you plan to extend your trip to Fuerteventura , perhaps the ideal solution is to split your stay in two halves, between the north and south of the island.
Fuerteventura Itinerary in a Few Days
Corralejo Natural Park is a paradise of sand, dunes, and emerald green waters. The color of the water is so striking it’s almost unbelievable.
To explore the entire park, you need to take the road that runs parallel to the coast. A perfectly designed route, allowing you to make as many stops as you like and enjoy the area.
Among the coolest beaches, we recommend visiting the Grandes Playas de Corralejo (the ones located next to the hotels), El Moro beach and Burro beach.
Besides enjoying the beaches, one of the most fun things you can do in Corralejo is walk, run, or whatever you want across the dunes.
An inexhaustible sea of sand that, together with the volcanoes that surround it, make up a beautiful and curious landscape.
In a paradise like this, the hours fly by. But it’s time to return and discover the charm of a highly touristy town that still retains its authentic corners .
Corralejo is one of the areas with the largest tourist infrastructure on the entire island, and the historic center, the seafront, and the small beach of Corralejo have a very special charm.
Lobos Island
Lobos Island is a little gem of Fuerteventura and is located just a 15 minute boat ride from the port of Corralejo.
There are ferries with daily departures, as well as taxi boats, or you can even book an organized catamaran excursion online with food included.
A new regulation has been in effect since January 2019, limiting the daily number of visitors and their length of stay.
You must request the permit in the morning (from 10:00 to 14:00) or in the afternoon (from 14:00 to 18:00) and only 3 days in advance.
Online bookings for ferries, taxi boats, and organized excursions usually include this management, so you can forget about everything.
Lobos Island is also characterized by boasting the cool volcanic terrain we have already seen in Fuerteventura.
You will enjoy impressive views from the top of a volcano and breathtaking landscapes.
An ideal place for snorkeling and being amazed by the electric blue color of the water.
El Cotillo
El Cotillo is one of the most famous towns in Fuerteventura due to its fantastic atmosphere that attracts tourists from all over the world every year.
El Cotillo and its heavenly beaches are capable of arousing indelible emotions even in the least sensitive tourist.
Here you can admire the most beautiful sunsets inFuerteventura , enjoying a drink in the many oceanfront bars and restaurants.
The beaches of El Cotillo, thanks to the ever-present trade winds and strong ocean currents, are a favorite spot for surfers on a trip to Fuerteventura.
Travelling through the island’s hinterland
The Canary Islands always have that ability to surprise and let’s see how to discover it.
The first stop takes us to the Vallebrón viewpoint, a balcony to get the best views of Tindaya mountain.
The place is steeped in mysticism and is full of legends as the Canarian aborigines believed in its magical properties.
Also, if you have time, there is an easy trail that leads to the top of this sacred mountain.
We continue our journey through Fuerteventura , driving through the island’s interior with short stops to enjoy the scenery until we reach the impressive Morro Velosa viewpoint.
And this is just a good prelude to what you can find a few kilometers further on, the Betancuria Natural Park.
Betancuria is the oldest town on the island and also the most beautiful, nestled in a valley among palm trees and the island’s typical vegetation.
The contrast of the white houses and beautiful architecture in this setting is stunning.
This city is perfect for strolling, from the Church of Santa María to the streets and squares wherever your steps take you.
We travel the same road that never ceases to give us unforgettable images such as the Barranco de Las Peñitas .
Ajuy boasts a spectacular black sand beach at the foot of its urban center.
A trail starting at the eastern end of the beach leads us along a path with very refreshing views of the cliffs.
The route ends at the Ajuy Volcanic Caves and, depending on the tides, you can enter to explore them.
Playa de Cofete and the beaches in the south of the island
Playa de Cofete and the beaches of southern Fuerteventura are an unmissable stop on a trip to Fuerteventura.
Cofete beach in Jandía Natural Park , the answer is very clear: it is a must-see, despite being 18 kilometers of dirt road.
Of course, you need to drive very carefully if you choose a rental car suitable for these difficult stretches.
Swimming is practically impossible, but it’s hard to resist a long walk and discover Fuerteventura’s natural places.
Furthermore, at the very point where the road ends, there’s a small and very picturesque cemetery. And very close by, you can visit Villa Winter (a must-see).
Returning to Morro Jable we discover the beautiful Matorral beach with a heavenly white sand coastline.
The next destination is Sotavento beach, one of the great icons of Fuerteventura.
There is not a single brochure on the island that does not feature an image of this beach, it looks like an authentic Caribbean postcard .
Here, in fact, you can discover what seems to be the most spectacular panoramic point on the island, the Sicasumbre panoramic point.
An ideal place for stargazing and discovering almost lunar landscapes.
And it is in this area that one is transported to distant places.
